At the Regional Forum on Strategies to Enhance Innovation and Management Capacities of Startups and SMEs” held in Manila, Philippines from 18 to 19 July 2018, experts from the region deliberated on critical challenges and suggested strategies to enhance management capacities of technology-based startups and SMEs. The Regional Forum was organized by APCTT in partnership with Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (TAPI-DOST), Republic of Philippines. The Secretary of DOST, Philippines, H.E. Prof. Fortunato T. De la Peña delivered keynote address at the Forum. Other key officials who addressed the Forum were Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, Undersecretary, DOST, Philippines, Engr. Edgar Garcia, Director of TAPI-DOST, and Ms. Michiko Enomoto, Head of APCTT. The Forum was organized in conjunction with the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) 2018 of the Philippines.

The Regional Forum provided a platform for policy makers and senior representatives from key Government agencies, universities, R&D institutions, financial institutions and SMEs to deliberate on new and emerging policy frameworks and tools, institutional/infrastructural support systems, national/regional collaboration networks and platforms and innovative financing models. Case studies and best practices for the promotion of technology-based start-ups and SMEs were also shared. Experts from the Philippines, Malaysia, India, Republic of Korea and Asian Development Bank (ADB) shared international and national perspectives as well as experiences related to promoting innovation in SMEs and startups with the participants. APCTT shared its regional experience in fostering innovation ecosystem, regional cooperation as well as knowledge networks for promoting technology-based startups and SMEs. Over 80 participants attended the deliberations of the Regional Forum. Recommendations from the Forum will contribute towards supporting SDG 9 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
