Pentaerythritol
An Indian consultancy company is offering the technology for manufacture of Pentaerythritol . It is manufactured with the reaction of acetaldehyde with an excess of formaldehyde in an alkaline medium solution is filtered, wet cake cried and pulverised. Pentaerythritol is a important chemical produced by the reaction of acetaldehyde with an excess of formaldehyde in an alkaline medium under vigorously controlled conditions. The first stage is the step wise reaction producing pentaerythritol in an aldol condensation . The second stage consists of cannizzaro reaction involving pentacrythrose and produces mono penta . The reaction is as under: 3HCHO+ CH3CHO =C( CH2OH )3 CHO HCHO+ C( CH2OH )3 CHO + NAOH = NACOOH + C( CH2 OH )4 The final product is obtained by evaporating part of water from evaporating mixture and permitting the pentaerythritol to crystallise from the concentrated solution . A small amount of other hydroxylated substances are also formed . One of them is di penta . The specifications of product and by-product are: Pentaerythritol: Mono penta content: : 92% min ( 95 % ) Moisture: : 0.5.5% max Ash : 0.1% ( o.o5% ) Melting point : 238-243 deg C Appearance : white crystalline powder . Sodium formate ( by product ) S.F. content : 90 % mim ( 95 % max ) Moisture : 0.5 % max Appearance : white crystalline powder Figures in bracket represent plant with electro dialyser for separation where minimum viable capacity is 10 MT /day The machinery required are: reactor, columns , evaporators, crystallizers, filters, centrifuges, dryers , pumps , weighing machine , intermediate vessels and tanks, piping, instrumentation , electricals , equipments for safety and fire fighting .
