Cost Effective Electrochemical Technology for the Production of Trimethyl Gallium, An Intermediate of the GaAs Semiconductor Production
The aim of the technology developed by the company is to establish an electro-chemical technology, with which semiconductor purity trimethyl-gallium can be produced among relatively low production costs. TRIMETHYL-GALLIUM - (TMG) -Ga(CH3)3 Gallium occurs in trace amounts in bauxite and zinc ores. It seems that the most competitive base material for the semiconductor production is gallium. The mentioned material has been used for a long while in the opto-electronic and microwave equipment area. The spread of it is limited by its high price. In comparison to the spare parts produced from silicon tools can be produced with much better properties, for example better speed, better thermal properties, etc. It seems that the most affirmative gallium based materials are actually the gallium-metalorganic compounds, among them trimethyl-gallium. Its price is higher than the price of the gallium-metal with identical purity, but it is possible to produce approximately 1 and a half kg trimethyl-gallium from 1 kg metal. Trimethyl-gallium has approximately the consistency of water and is a colorless fluid, which has a boiling point of 60 C, reacts with water explosionlike, it flames up on its own in reaction with air. Therefore the transport is difficult. Hungary includes 10 % of the world’s metal-gallium production. Because of that fact the company started to develop a technology for the production of trimethyl-gallium, in order to ensure that the gallium could be sold with a price tenfold of the metal’s price. The prior mentioned facts confirm this conception. The company has developed such an electro-chemical technology, with which semiconductor purity trimethyl-gallium can be produced among relatively low production costs. The, during the cleaning produced secondary trimethyl-gallium can be used for the production of solar cells. (The efficiency of silicon based solar cells can be specified at approximately 10 %, the efficiency of gallium-arsenide based solar cells at 35%.) With the help of this special electro-chemical technology it is possible to produce such an adduct, which has its melting-point at 25 C, and is therefore practically storable, safely transportable, for example via planes too.
Sector: Electrical & Electronics
Country: Hungary
Area of Application: • Semiconductor producing industry • Bauxite mining industry
Keywords: Semiconductor, mining, bauxite, gallium
Advantages: - It can be applied directly in the actually used epitaxy growing equipments with small modifications, directly before the production. - The production can be achieved among laboratory conditions with a from the company developed and produced special "chamber", in such a way, that the production does not have environmental damaging effects at all. - The gallium could be sold with a price tenfold of the metal’s price. - With the help of this special electro-chemical technology it is possible to produce such an adduct, which has its melting-point at 25 C, and is therefore practically storable, safely transportable, for example via planes too.
