Kalina Power Cycle Technology (Germany)
Exorka International Limited, through its subsidiaries, is a global sub-licensee for the Kalina power cycle technology. The Kalina power cycle is a more efficient technology for converting low to mid temperature (100°C to 200°C) heat sources into electricity (compared with more traditional thermodynamic cycles). In simple terms, the Kalina cycle is a Rankine cycle that uses a mixture of elements as its working fluid instead of water or organic hydro-carbons used in conventional Rankine or organic Rankine applications respectively. The mixture used for Kalina is ammonia and water (the “working fluid”). Apart from the working fluid, all of the other elements of a Kalina power plant are conventional. The hardware is familiar to any power engineer and includes heat exchangers, turbine-generators piping, pumps and control systems. The “sweet spot” for Kalina lies in the range spanning 100°C to 200°C (and in some cases higher temperatures). The majority of the world’s geothermal resources lies in this temperature range but remains to date mostly undeveloped.
