Selection of Stem Cells through Resistance to Death Signals
The technology exploits the resistant to death property of stem cells. Cell death plays a pivotal role in the regulation of cell growth in the fetus and adult. The resistance to death is imprinted in a variety of stem cells, and disappears upon the stem cell's differentiation and proliferation. Through intensive laboratory work, a procedure has been formulated that exploits the resistance characteristic of stem cells so that they survive. The procedure involves binding of cell surface receptors that normally signal cell death in differentiating and proliferating cells, thereby providing the means for isolation of stem cells from non-stem cells.
Sector: Pharmaceuticals
Country: India
Area of Application: medical industry.
Keywords: Death Signals,Regenerative medicine.
Advantages: Marker molecules are not used due to doubt of their veracity. Select stem and progenitor cells from multiple sources (hematopoietic, neural, mesenchymal, etc). No necessity of modification or genetic manipulation for stem cell isolation. Isolate stem and progenitor cells in organs and tissues where the identity of stem cells is unknown (i.e. pancreas, heart, endothelium, etc). Select for stem cells during cell engineering by DNA and RNA insertion. Continuously select for stem cells to increase purity during ex vivo expansion. The approach is applicable to stem cells from multiple sources. Select for stem cells during cell engineering by DNA and RNA insertion.
