Animal Model System to Study Pathogenesis
The technology suggests methods for studying pathogenesis of mammalian viruses [Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV)] utilizing a nonhuman Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) animal model system. “Infection System” - C. elegans infected by animal virus identify: 1) Host determinants for susceptibility to viral infections, 2) Path ways and key mediators of these pathways, and3) New leads for development of antivirals or for evaluating the efficacy of antivirals on individual host genetic backgrounds. The technology demonstrates that the disease can be generated in the nematode, C. elegans upon exposure to VSV, a virus that infects mammalian cells. This discovery demonstrates that a simple animal model system can be used to study the disease pathogenesis of mammalian viruses. The technology further demonstrates that VSV can cause disease in C. elegans, an invertebrate that was not previously known to be infected by VSV or other vertebrate animal viruses.
