Polymersomes as Novel Drug Delivery System
The proposed technology addresses the existing problem of body burden posed by high molecular weight PEG, by use of branched polymers. Use of branched polymers enabled reduction of chain length/molecular weight of PEG. Overall, the molecular weight and ratio of different components remains the same in polymeric backbone, due to which desired properties are not compromised. However, hydrophilicity on the surface of the polymersomes is greatly enhanced, which results in better circulation and faster elimination from body i.e. reduction in bio-burden.
Sector: Pharmaceuticals
Country: India
Area of Application: Pharmaceutical industry, medical industry.
Keywords: drug delivery system, polyethylene glycol, PEG, polymerosome
Advantages: Capable to encapsulate hydrophilic, hydrophobic as well as amphoteric molecules and control their release. Better and longer circulation in the body Polymersomes can be used in varied applications like drug delivery, imaging for diagnostic purpose, magnetic particles and other biomedical applications where encapsulation and controlled release of material is required. Have reduced polymeric burden. Further ramification can be made by changing polymer chemistry to attach ligands for targeting or other purposes and fine tuning the hydrophilic to hydrophobic ratio. It enhances the time-period or half-life of regular short-duration drugs.
