These modules are designed to address the urgent need for capacity-building for Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) actors in the Asia-Pacific region to enhance climate resilience and sustainable development. These modules focus on equipping key stakeholders—policymakers, academic institutions, private sectors, and research entities—with the necessary skills and knowledge to overcome barriers in climate technology adoption and transfer. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to build climate resilience, improve regulatory frameworks, and drive the adoption of sustainable technologies across the region.
The Need for Capacity Building on Transfer of Technology
The Asia-Pacific region faces significant climate-related vulnerabilities, including extreme poverty, high pollution levels, and increased disaster displacement. Moreover, the technology transfer process is often hampered by limited technical expertise, weak regulatory frameworks, and inadequate financing mechanisms. The adoption of climate technologies requires not only technical knowledge but also an understanding of intellectual property (IP) rights, regulatory frameworks, and commercialisation strategies.
The Capacity Building Modules will help create a robust ecosystem for climate technology transfer by targeting key stakeholders involved in climate policy, innovation, and technology deployment. This comprehensive program supports regional and global climate goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, while contributing to the region’s socioeconomic growth through the successful commercialisation of climate innovations.
Nine Structured Modules for Capacity Building
The following nine modules are designed to cover all aspects of climate technology transfer, from innovation theory to full-scale commercialisation:
Module 1: Conceptual and Theoretical Models of Innovation
Module 2: Proof of concept research, Technology Valuation, Scaling and Sustainability, Technology Licensing Office (TLO’s)
Module 3: Analysis and Planning, Technology Valuation, Technology Evaluation, Commercialization.
Module 4: Regulatory Approvals, Intellectual Property Rights(IPR), Field Testing, Small Scale Prototype
Module 5: Large Scale Prototype
Module 6: Prototype System demonstration in the intended environment
Module 7: Demonstration System (Feasibility demonstration in pre-commercial environment, Viability demonstration)
Module 8: First-of-a-Kind Demonstration System ( Feasibility demonstration, Viability demonstration, Manufacturing, System Complete)
Module 9: Marketing, TRL upgrade, Technology Licensing Office (TLO)
The APCTT Capacity Building Modules will play an important role in supporting the Asia-Pacific region’s transition toward climate resilience and sustainable development. By empowering key stakeholders with the knowledge and skills needed for climate technology transfer, these modules aim to bridge the gap between innovation and application, ensuring that climate technologies can be effectively implemented to address the region’s pressing environmental challenges.
